Greenstat Hydrogen and WRI India partner to catalyze green hydrogen adoption

Greenstat Hydrogen India and WRI India sign MoU to make India a green hydrogen producing hub

New Delhi, Feb 25, 2022: Greenstat Hydrogen India Private Limited and World Resources Institute India (WRI India) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday to work on strategizing a roadmap for green hydrogen generation in India.

This collaboration will explore and define the technical and operational feasibility of green hydrogen deployment across different sectors with a focus on energy intensive, hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, cement, heavy transport and power.

Speaking at the signing, Mr. Sturle Pedersen, Chairman, Greenstat Hydrogen India, said, “Leading a broad representation of Norwegian cutting-edge expertise within the hydrogen sector, we are thrilled to be a part of this exciting journey with WRI India, supporting R&D institutes and the Indian government. Hydrogen is a natural energy carrier representing a vital part of the sustainable energy mix and solution. We look forward to learning from our partnership with WRI India and sharing our knowledge with our partners and collaborators.”

Dr. OP Agarwal, CEO, WRI India, said, “India is one of the top importers of crude oil and there is an urgent need to cut down both emissions and fossil fuel dependency. This partnership comes at a critical time when tapping the potential in green hydrogen can set the country on the path to energy self-reliance. Green hydrogen, as a cross-sectoral energy vector, can play a key role in decarbonization of hard-to abate sectors while fulfilling its COP26 commitments.”

Mr. Pawan Mulukutla, Director, Clean Mobility and Energy Tech, WRI India, said, “This collaboration comes at an opportune moment with India having recently launched a comprehensive Green Hydrogen Policy. Our partnership will leverage technical expertise, knowledge-sharing and market intelligence to accelerate India’s transition to a green hydrogen economy, which will be pivotal in aligning the country’s on-ground realities with its climate aspirations. This collaboration aims to be a disruptive force in the carbon-intensive industrial sector and set the pace for their energy transition journey.”

As of 2020, India’s industrial sector (34%) was the most highly energy intensive followed by transport and the construction/building sectors. By 2030, India will be the third largest energy consumer in the world. Industries such as refineries, fertilizers and methanol currently use hydrogen as feedstock; however, this hydrogen is primarily produced from natural gas which is a highly carbon intensive process. Green hydrogen, on the other hand, is produced from electrolysis of water, using renewable energy, and thus has no associated emissions. The low carbon intensity of green hydrogen, along with its varied applications as feedstock and fuel, will see it play a critical role in accelerating the decarbonization of India’s most emission intensive sectors.
